The Wyandotte County Behavioral Health Court was established in October 2017 to more effectively address the needs of defendants in the criminal justice system who suffer from severe and persistent mental illness.
The goal of the Behavioral Health Court is to identify and address defendants in the criminal justice system who suffer from SPMI. It is to develop individualized treatment plans for participants in the court and provide access to appropriate community-based services, including mental health and substance abuse treatment services. It is to reduce the participant's time spent in the criminal justice system. It is to reduce recidivism and to protect public safety by supervising participants who have been placed on probation through intensive, evidence-based practices.
